Astronomical observatories in Chile

Why most important astronomical observatories are located in North chile? The skies of northern Chile are considered the best in the world to do astronomy. More and more Chileans and foreigners who visit the various facilities for observing the heavens during the last decade. However, most astronomical observatories stationed in the "Little North" (Third and Fourth Region) from the 60's are exclusive to science, which leaves little to the tourist. In the mid-'90s, a study by European scientists belonging to the European Southern Observatory (ESO) decided to build a sophisticated new observatory, this time in the Norte Grande (Region II), for highly scientific and identify and unveil large mysteries in space. The place chosen was Cerro Paranal Observatory of the same name which is considered the largest in the world. There are three institutions established in Chile for astronomical research, being the country with the highest concentration instrumental for such purposes. These institutions are: the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA), European Southern Observatory (ESO) and the Carnegie Institution.
